wat would be the best substrate to buy for a bichir tank? how would i buy it at the petstore. also where could i get those pipes that u see in pics and how would i lean them when first bouhgt?

Fine crushed gravel or sand both should be available at the lfs in bags or go to a pool supply store and get filter sand.

Pipes if your talking about the white ones used for caves and hiding spots its PVC
pipe from any DIY store. If thats not the pipes you are talking about ya got me -Anne

with siphon during water changes when you see the sand getting close to the top of the tube simply lift the tube slightly and it will fall back down-Anne

how do you clean pvc pipes, like during water changes? Or perhaps when you first buy it?

You can pull it out of a tank and rinse it out, or just point a water pump in it.

I prefer not to use pvc because of that, instead I prefer wide open caves that the bichirs can swim through or hide under, created with driftwood preferably, or rocks.

It's got that aesthetic naturalistic vibe, and the swimming/dashing of the bichirs from time to time will keep it clear of debris since it just floats out and gets sucked into the filters.

HTH

Oh, and I think this is the best substrate for bichirs (small and smoooth) :D :http://www.monsterfishkeepers.com/forums/showthread.php?t=196481
