Yes, especially white or any lighter colored substrates but that's not always the case. They usually just bleach out.

I'm not sure about the pool filter sand as I've never try using them.

You say, "...not always the case. They usually just bleach out." Isn't bleaching out the same as losing color? I love my ornate bichir and clown loaches. I don't want them to lose their color.

Good water quality, proper foods and the right environment for them, will help them not to lose their color.
