I started two weeks ago trying to get my florida gar off feeders. the first 7 days i tried all sorts of foods pellets, thawed shrimp, dried krill and nothing no bite. at day 8 i gave hime 2 red minnowes and started the process all over again, i got to day 8 with the same results as week one, so i tried a different aproach. i found frozen krill at my lfs with a nice orange color, i figuered the gar might think is a minnow and chomp on it, well i was right the second he saw them right down the hatch lol. im so relieved. now lets see how to trick em into pellet food.

btw,can some one id please? sorry....

nice job getting him off feeders! dont really know how to go from krill to pellets, may be mixing the pellets with the krill and may be the smell will be on the pellets.

GL, what size tank is he in?

The transition from Krill to (mini salad size) market shrimp should be a snap. From there bigger sized shrimp from skewer should be the next step. When your gar eats shrimp from a skewer, any other type of aquatic meat should not be a challenge.

I netted a bunch of tree frog tadpoles from my swimming pool cover early this spring and everything ate them (including my gars).

Yesterday I decided to go one step further. I bought a 1LB package of Bullfrog legs from Lexington Market. Oh yes, inexpensive treat that the gars all loved!

Consider trying frozen silverside minnows. My gars wouldn't take them at first, but after a week of eating shrimp they started accepting the silversides. Probably out of competition for food but its worth a try anyways...
