Successful Parrot x Parrot Breeding!

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Thats awesome. And yes, it can be done. A friend had a success with a parrot bought from the dreaded petsmart and it was fertile. It still breeds today and the owner has had many successful spawnings in the tank that just the two are in. Also, I'm sure that male would not let anyone near those eggs. My two pairs try to spawn but I'm 99% sure he only shoots blanks. But if I, or any other fish come near his nest he built, he will bite (pinch) and chase everyone off. Congrats again! Can't wait for pics.

thats fantastic news! you're quite lucky.
if i were you, i'd sell a lot of the offspring online to try to spread them out because odds are, that the male offspring will be fertile too. or at least a few will be.

Might be a good idea, problem is I couldn't sell them with the "hopes" that they might be fertile--giving the customer false anticipations in the event they weren't later on.

I could see it now:

Courtroom, June 14th, 2016.

(Attorney): Plaintiff, please tell us exactly how it happened:

(Hybrid fanatic): That man sold me a supposedly fertile male parrot Cichlid, but after 34 attempts over the past 6 years, not one fry has been produced!

(Jury Collective): <wooohs in surprise!>

(Hybrid fanatic): I have embarrassed myself to all of my friends, leading them to believe I had a special fish. Now, I have suffered this sadness these years, and all because of the lies from THAT MAN! <points at me>

(Attorney): Defendent, is all that he said true?

(Me): Did you test his water? From parameters I measured from the water his fish is in over there, I have discovered his water tests low on the Ph--and I found nitrite levels soaring. I have written documentation that states I pulled this off with the offsprings father in a higher Ph level sustained between 7.4 and 7.8 with nitrites and nitrates non-existant. I cannot take fault for that man's inability to follow simple instructions. Can I go home now?

(Courtroom Collective): <silence from complete confusion of what I just said>

(Judge): Plaintiff, is this evidence true?

(Hybrid Fanatic): I, uh... um, but... I... he... they are... um, uhh...

(Judge): Well, that does it for me. Defendant, I don't have a clue about what you just said, but that satisfies the courtroom. Plaintiff, go get your water checked. <smashes anvil> Next!

(Me): Hey, Hybrid Fanatic. If you don't want that fish, can I have it back? My fertile male died of old age--sure would be nice to have another one.

somebody's got a little bit too much free time. :grinno:

can we see pics of the little fry swimmers

great story and photos. it's obvious that you love to type too :D

i also think since the dad is fertile the possibility, (of some sort of number) of fertile males coming from him within his lifetime.

i swear this is the first example i've ever seen or heard of resulting in a fertile male parrot. i've hear ppl say they have fertile males and have yet seen any sort of outstanding proof thus far. you should get alot of photos or video of frys and parents. i'd also document any sort of info and pictures on a time line basis of sorts. because if what you say is truth. it would be lovely to have proof. to show ppl that ask.

Yeah, I do like to type when in the mood. I have been typing and writing for years, and do so very quickly, so I guess that gives me more grace in being long winded at times. :D

Anyhow, I have been struggling to get photos of the fry, but she keeps them in the front right corner of the tank in a huddle, and no matter how I angle the camera, I cannot get a view on them. There was 8, but I only see 5 as of now. They appear to still have yolk sacs, and are face down in the few pieces of substrate the parents placed there.

As assumed, the rest of the eggs did turn white and were eaten.

When, exactly, would you think a safe time would be to remove them from the tank? I'm afraid too many more days in there, and they'll become a snack to the other fish. I really have no where to put them except maybe in with my daughter's miniature livebearer tank temporarily. They're still too small to go there as of yet, though.

I may go buy a 10g from my LFS.

I will get pics up of the fry soon as I can.
