Successful Pike Tankmates?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
I have had pikes in with almost everything, even flowerhorns. That said, I have never had a flowerhorn that was as crazy as everyone says. My pikes hae generally only been aggressive to other pikes.

You did the flowehorn mix?!?! haha thats such a gamble! What pikes did you keep? and which ones were aggressive towards other pikes?

I agree with clgkag that the pikes tend to be aggressive towards other pikes and similar shaped fishes usually

I have had vens, lents, cincta, bellycrawlers, sveni and sp. lugubris all in with large ca/sa cichlids. The bellycrawler, sveni and cincta pretty much tolerated anything. The lent, ven and sp. lugubris were all very territorial with other pikes. I have a cincta and a species lugubris in a large tank now with a bunch of large fish and no issues other than the lugubris doesn't like to share food with the lent.

I did comm them with rays
Last item on my list. LOL

well i correct my correction then and i maintain my last statement! haha its harder to mfk on my iphone than it would be on a regular computer! im still trying to get the hang of it

I'm getting a cincta shipped within the week and I hope mine is as community oriented as yours! I have a sveni(maybe), and a royal pleco that i just picked up today. Once he settles in his tank I'm going to post pics of the little guy to maybe get an accurate ID on him. the lfs that i got him at just labelled him 'pike cichlid' so who knows. I just really want a pike tank and thats what I'm doing currently. I just like the variety of what they can be kept with...too bad they mostly hate each other!

My lents are extremely pushy and I wouldn't put them in with more peaceful stuff. I had to move some of my large male severums because they were getting pushed up into the top corners of the tank. The only fish left in the tank with them are a giant H. psittacus, a spawning pair of Atabapo severums, and a male Saxatilis pike. They constantly challenge the other fish in the tank. As soon as the Atabapo pair release their fry, the pikes barge in and attack the parents, then eat all the fry. Once every week or so I come home to find my severums all beat up from trying to defend their brood. I definitely wouldn't try these particular pikes with anything like discus or mellow SAs.

I guess it really boils down to not only tank size, but individual temperament. All cichlids vary in behavior and aggression. It just so happens that my two lents, which were pretty mellow for their previous owner, have taken advantage of being top dogs in my tank and quickly attack anything that tries to venture too close.

I have always mixed my pikes with large eartheaters, Satanoperca mostly, they have always pretty much ignored eachother in my experiences.

I figured that pikes would be opportunistic when it came to aggression, as they are ambush predators in the wild if I'm not mistaken.. I figure when it comes to big pikes I'll have to keep them with semi-aggressives so they can defend themselves and yet not be overly aggressive as to kill the pikes.

I have a male & female Xingu and a Lenticulata. They are housed with (larger than them), 2 male Tex, F- Kraussi, M- Hogaboomarum, M- Loisellei, Uro, M- Grammode. Same size or smaller than the Pike: F- Hoga, F- Loisellei, F- Carpintis, M-Kraussi, F- Grammode, F- Xiloaensis. The Pikes are right around 6-8", and they are doing quite well with everyone. Occasionally they flare at the other fish. The Lent is the most territorial, it doesn't care for any fish, regardless of size, swimming in its area. But, all in all, it has been a decent community.
