I want to breed my 2 flowerhorns in my 55. But they hate each other so much. I just was thinking about taking them out for a little bit (maybe a day in one of their own 10 gallons) and then putting some barbs in there as dithers and then putting them back in the 55 without a divider.

Do people use dithers like barbs with flowerhorns? I have seen aquamojo use them with doviis, but Im not aquamojo.

If I do use barbs, should I use barbs that are bigger than the flowerhorns? Becasue right now mine are about 2-2.5 inches.

Nope, you're not. AquaMojo would not be keeping Flowerhorns. ;)

A 55g is REALLY small for breeding Flowerhorns, especially if they are really aggressive towards one another. How big are these two?

i dunno. 95 percent of my breedings were in a bare 55g
dither fish imo are not good for breeding, just making the fish more aggresive towards each other. its allabout getting the right vibes from two diff fish. buy a barry manaloe cd

i would suggest putting a clear barrier up until the first laying off eggs. these will be cleaned up and considered test eggs. no sense in letting ur fish get beat up if she won't even lay eggs.the male seeing this through the divider and picking up on the females behavior will become more interested. then keep the barrier up for 1 more week<to intrest the male even more.> then take the barrier down the female should have 2-3 weeks with the male un divided to excite him and get him in the mood for fertilization<it takes about 4-5 weeks untill she can lay eggs again.> make sure there is a pot with a small hole in it, or a cave that only the female can go in incase fighting gets to tense, plus having her own hide spot will reduce stress and help with the process. always expect the male to get beat up, so make sure he is 2-4 inches bigger, if not more so he will survive it. besides that, make sure there is smooth rocks, or clay dishes for the fish to lay eggs on. a temp of 84-86 works perfect and if he is still ripping ur female apart, u just havn't found one he likes. sometimes i have to try 3 females out before i find a pair. gl and show pics

Yeah the female laid eggs once (a couple weeks ago) and I have the tank divided with eggcrate and they show much interest.

She is showing her colors again and getting plump with eggs.

They are each 2-2.5 inches, maybe the male is 3, but I don't think so (madwhitehat, i said that in the first post.)

anyway I have tried moving one to the others side, and they always just beat the **** out of each other. Last time I did it though, the female layed eggs the day after. I tried it again tonight and they just...like...torpedoed each other so I seperated them again. I am thinking about scooping them out and adding more hiding spots and then re-introducing them, is this a good idea? Well I might have to wait untill my male gets bigger so I can make some hiding spots that I am sure my male won't be able to get into.

the male is about a half inch bigger than the female, but its also taller (kinda rectangular shaped, as oppose to the female that is more oval shaped)

you nailed this one bro very good advice:D
Also I do agree 55 is just fine for breeding FH 95% of mine are normally done in either 55 or 60 gal breeders as well. Some FH's just never take to each other this is why it is not as easy as it looks. Fishtankdork is right though in what he said. See if she will even lay eggs because there is no reason to introduce them and have them fighting if she wont even take the first step.

my female HAS laid eggs and she will probably lay some more in 3 days, her breeding tube got bigger today. Its not as big as the last time, but its getting there.

I put the male on her side tonight becasue they have dug a pit in the gravel to the bottom of the divider (I figure they are trying to get to each other)

they weren't as aggressive this time. (The female especially) They did their tailwhips but they kept like curling onto each other. The male was definitely dominant this time around, no contest. Still I figure maybe I can just put him back tonight and try to take the divider out and put some more hiding spots in by thursday if she doesn't lay eggs again before that. This way I can sleep at night knowing the female will be safe and able to hide.

thansk for the help
