I was thinking of picking up some caulk for the new tank I pick up today and running a coat over the seams before I transplant everything into the new tank -- Any suggestions on the type of sealant? I'll probably stop at Home Depot to get it. Figure it will be easier to put a second layer on there before I put any fish in it. How thick do you put the second coat on? How long should I let it dry before I move the fish? Sort of in a crisis situation now with the leak being so big, can't keep the fish in this tank much longer.

get an acrylic tank. i've yet to see an acrylic tank at that size bust a seam. now, on a few 800+ tanks i've seen seams go on acrylic as well as glass, but nothing this small. so save yourself the time and hassle and get an acrylic tank.

If you just plan on doing the outside seams on the tank you can move the fish immediately I would think. Since the outside seams aren't exposed to water it can cure naturally in about 1-2 days I believe. If your gonna silicone the inside too then I'd wait 2-3 days to be sure.

My LFS (which doesn't sell top fin tanks) has alway said that they have more leakers come back with hex tanks and bowfront tanks.
I believe this is because the glass does not intersect at right angles to each other like in a rectangular tank, which makes it much more difficult to seal at that seam..
in the future I would avoid Top Fin tanks (they are made by Marineland/Perfecto but they are a 'low end' product from them) so it probably didn't help matters.
