Hey. I was considering looking into buying a catfish for my tank. I'm absolutely in love with gulper cats but plan to have a 55g in the future solely for 1-3 of them so that's out of the question in my current tank, as I don't want a gulper eating any of my current inhabitants. I like roundish bodied fatter catfish (similar to the gulper catfish's look) with the whiskers. I don't like the slender longish body shapes or shovel nose aesthetics.

Current tank and stock:
125g standard 6ft tank. Very open. No caves, rocks or anything. Just a thin layer of crushed coral, 2 fake plants, and some medium river rocks around the plants to keep them anchored down.

-1 Red Oscar 8-9"
-1 Mono Pbass 7-8"
-7 Silver Dollar 5"

-6 More Silver Dollar growing out in a 40g atm and will be introduced once they are at a size they won't be eaten by the Oscar

-1 6" Clown Knife also growing out in a 40g until he is fattened up (was very thin and scarce looking when ordered from the lfs) and a decent size to add into the tank. I'll be providing some sort of caves when he goes in. Likely in the form of the basic cichlid cave upside down bowls with the single door.

Future plans for a tank include a 360g plywood build once I move to Ohio. No point in starting anything so big if I plan to be moving by the end of the year.

Any suggestions for a cool SINGLE (non schooling) catfish species that would grow a decent size, but not too big, and would be non aggressive enough to hang with the rest of my stock? It goes without saying, please no one say RTC TSN or Gulper.

Random note. I've seen a fellow acquaintance online that had some species of bullhead in his tank w/ three O but the bullhead seemed very aggressive with the O and had to be removed. I do like the aethetic LOOKS of the bullhead though. Short, fat body. Rounded. Etc.

Megalodoras uranoscopus, Pterodoras granulosus. These two do eventually get big but are slower growing. Or since you like gulpers why not the somewhat similar looking Trachycorystes trachycorystes. Sun Catfish might be something you would like as well.

Trachycorystes trachycorystes x2 there all black skin makes them look pretty slick. They are not like the gulpers which need food that is about 60% of their body and can eat just about anything you feed them. Just be aware they will still eat smaller fish.

Thanks for the responses guys. Sorry it took me so long to respond back. I've been real hectic with work this weekend and just now finally get to relax.

I definitely like that Trachycorystes trachycorystes. Would I have any issues in the future adding an Ornate Bichir to the bottom with them co-existing both being bottom dwellers? Are they a readily available species in the fish market? Expensive, cheap, easy to come by, difficult to come by?

Get more clowns for your lonely one imo, they arn't themselves untill 4+

Uhhm, what?.... As far as I understand CK are most definitely not schooling/shoaling fish that need to be kept in group and prefer to be alone. Also, as far as I understand, they will become quite aggressive towards any CK tank mate. This response is quite out there in left field.

merodontotus tigrinus. Looks super cool!

This is an excellent example of what I absolutely do not like in a catfish. Long, slender body, shovel nose shaped beak.

Syn. Decorus

Again, too narrow and pointy for my liking. I like the rounded front, fatty cats. Also I should have mentioned I'm not a huge fan of the streamer fins. Not that I dislike them, but I don't particularly care for them either.
