Suggest A Catfish Species For My Stock & Tank?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
As far as the trachy I'm not sure about mixing with bichirs. King-El has both in his tank but his tank goes against all the regular rules for stocking fish. Available infrequently, not something your likely to find in a store but you should be able to get from a vendor on here. As far as price it seems to really vary by size. A 12" wildcaught one was selling in a store locally for around $150 and smaller specimens going for $40.

bullhead theres bunch difrent types. yello brown exc. jurense catfish , tigs,

First. Big no-no for crushed coral and short/fat cats I have in mind :(

Second. No caves/hiding spots is also not a good thing if you want to keep softbodied cats especially with the 'O , Pbass or the CK. Raphaels and megadoras are one of the hardier cats out there that can handle but isn't aggressive or able to defend themselves if its full frontal assult if CK or the O decided to beat them up though.

Dont want anything aggressive not many options out there in my opinion with your current stocklist/tank specs that would be safe/ok

Consider getting a different type of catfish- a pleco! theres so many Plecs out there that's SHORT BODIED AND FAT like the huge royals. Whoo!

But til you switch out the crushed coral its not going to be good for any bottom dweller long term tho.

Definitely not digging the tininess of the raphael cat. That'll be lunch in no time in my tank. Are the different bullhead colors really that diverse in there aggressiveness and growth size? I assumed they were all mainly semi aggressive and grew to roughly around the same size.

Thanks for the tips but I will never own a pleco so long as I'm in the hobby Proteus. Not even a consideration for me. What's the problem with the crushed coral? I'm actually ASSUMING it's crushed coral. See, it came in a tank I got that was previously salt water and it has the appearance of a larger granule PFS but I noticed a little pointed twist shell in the substrate so I assumed it was some sort of SW substrate. Of course I only saw ONE of the little pointy twist spiral shells so maybe it's just regular PFS and that's leftover from the sw tank?... Not sure.

I don't throw my fish in the tank sink or swim, heh'. If I get one that needs hiding spots I'll accommodate them. For instance the CK isn't in the tank yet, but when he's moved I'm going to fashion at least 2 hiding spots for him to be comfortable in there.

Interesting. It's kind of sounding like it could be hit or miss for my scenario. I'm really liking some of the bullheads I've been researching. I wasn't aware channel, rtc, and tsn were all types of bullhead. I think I might just find myself that ornate for my bottom dweller for my large tank, and since I plan to have one last tank for a gulper or three I might consider just doing a bullhead in that tank and that can be my "catfish" tank.

I totally feel you about not getting plecos I was this way until I got my first sultan pleco.

I do have a thing for cats myself, My favorites is the Jaguar catfish however I never see them in the tank unless theres no decor in the tank which they're not happy about at this time when I'm doing tank redo.

Those type of substances are never good for the catfish to start with anyhow if they were used in the saltwater tank.

Check out planetcatfish.com for the size requirements just play around with your search features on the top of my head is the rusty jelly catfish that might be able to be aggressive when needed and gets to 12''-15'' Another cat I always wanted but could not have was the harlequin lancer cat which def in next on my list. I saw my first one at a LFS in milwaukee last year and just never was able to get its neat markings out of my mind.

Good luck!

I've had pleco in the past. I really like their aesthetics but don't care for their inactivity or their MASSIVE bioload. The good DEFINITELY outweighs the bad for me with pleco. Won't have any again in any of my tanks. What exactly is ideal substrate for a catfish then? You'd think fine sand would be good since it's less likely to scratch their soft skin right?... Those two you mentioned look interesting for sure. I'm all about gulpers. My only second tank plans are for 1-3 of them so like I said, I might consider a bullhead of some sort WITH maybe my one gulper. I'd like 2-3 but we all know how expensive they are so yeah.
