I'm surprised no one mentioned umbees yet.

So far your suggestions are
1. dovii,beani,umbee,Red Instalanum, Red Tiger Mot >>> 2. Red devil,jaguar,sagittae,trimac,festae,large pike cichlids

I think also a black nasty can go with 1. What do you think about buttis? I think this is a great list but 400G may not be enough if to put them all together.
(emperors, peacockbass, redbaysnook, convicts, neets were cut off because of their size)
So extract some of these and make a your own list if you'r to make the meanest 400G cichlid tank.

Just going to point out, neets are a major food source for dovii in some habitats. Dovii and nics have even been observed working together against neets, which would be a VERY interesting biotope if you had thousands of gallons to try it with.

That's crazy. I realize its still just a theory but there actually were Nics protecting Dovii fry. It may be open for speculation but its incredible nonetheless.

Nice videos. I think anyone who has mature Dovii for years would think differently.

If you want to cram a large tank full of solid hiding places....maybe, I don't know. I know Dovii are pretty determined and if it can be moved, shuffled, knocked down and anything in between a male will. Unlike the videos you posted. All those hiding places will be moved.

A mature male Dovii hardly notice, I don't doubt that.

Good idea.......a good fresh food source as they get picked off one by one ;).

I'm sure with your example above, lots of hiding places in a monster tank some would survive.

Dogofwar has mentioned these little hell raisers before. They seem like some little guys with a monster attitude that can back it up.

I need to keep this spices sooner or later.

I might add... I've seen examples of tanks where people keep Tetras in with Black Piranhas and Convicts in with Red Bellied Piranhas and Platy's in with Red Devils. If fed well, They will mostly ignore the smaller fish, and not even notice them. Its my personal idea to keep Neets in with a large male Dovii as it would look cool, and quite possibly work. I'd always keep some Neets in a seperate tank aswell though incase the experiment didn't work. They breed like no tomorrow :)

Had a pair of Neets I got from Rapps bout 2 years ago I tradedmy 5in. male to a lfs. He ripped off a large portion of my Arrowanas jaw who was pushing 20 inches. Jeff said they do better in big groups though, but alone they are an absolute terror! Constantly taking on fish twice there size!

I own a butti as it is a very common LFS fish here in Asia. I don't know if it's male or female. At 6" it has stood its ground against an 8" male midevil for 3 days before backing down. It was kinda mellow after that and would always submit to my 7" green terror. Then it hit 8". For a time, it was the one chasing the green terror until I moved it to quarantine. I have other fish in my community and it seemed like it will only bully fish it is relatively larger against. Nice coloration and personality. I say get a few for a 400g tank but not above 6pcs. You can get my buttikoferi for free if you are close coz I'm about to get rid of him/her. Hahaha... S/he is a wrong purchase anyway.

True... The much larger Firemouths I had for a short while in with my Neets lost most of their fins and, in the end, had to be seperated... Convicts getting bullied by them and they just nip and pester many larger fish but with Dovii I just think the balance of size over aggression will be just right.

Is it an american cichlid? I've seen malawi like that.

@prashan A butti and black nasty could be added to list #1. I'm not sure about peacock bass since they are more predatory then mean. Personally never seen one battle a cichlid for dominance or territory. Emperor red bay snooks convicts can all hold their own and emperor and snooks can be added to the list aslo. I've heard true green terror can be pretty mean too.

Fish aggressiveness changes drastically with the size of tank and availability of personal space. In a small tank, there is no place for big fish to run and bullying is a common problem. When I moved the same cichlids from my 75 gal to a 125 gal, I notice the bully of the tank has mellowed down. I have no experience with a 400 gal tank but it is a huge tank and the fish behavior will change drastically. I have been to a few public aquariums with CA display tanks. These are 500+ gal tanks and I was surprised to observe full grown big humped Midas, Trimac, Dovie and Red Devil swim peacefully side by side like angels and discus.

Something to think about when you mention Haitiensis(Black Nasty), is that while dominant males are extremely aggressive, long time owners tend to agree that if the Black Nasty can't dominate, then they tend to stress, get bloat and die. Haitiensis do well mostly in species only tanks. I'd hate to see a beast Black Nasty bloat and die because somebody puts him in a tank with a monster Trimac or Dovii.
