I had 2 monster14 inch L95s w.c. and the first would not eat so he lasted about a month. The second one did real well till I added about a 8 inch goldie. They goldie beat up real bad one night. He did not make it either L95 are not a stand their ground type of pleco. I would stay away from them unless you have a more peaceful tank.
Yes, I think an L114 is a good candidate. But it may be tough finding a "cheap" large one (at least they are cheaper than L14s). I got mine through snook12/John, and it was about 100+ for 4, but they were 1.5-2" SL. Right now, there is an aquabid auction for about $50 each for about that size: http://www.aquabid.com/cgi-bin/auction/auction.cgi?fwcatfishp&1337321106
Another thought. Where in VA are you? If you can wait until October, come check out the Catfish Convention by Dulles Airport. There will be vendors bringing in fancy plecos, and you can see what you are getting, or you can contact a vendor in advance to ask him to bring a fish to you (and maybe save on shipping?). Here's the link on the convention:
So out of all of the Pleco's that have been mentioned, which would be the best for a pleco newbie. I'd prefer a carnivore that is at least semi active or at least hides in plain sight
I'm in Roanoke. I believe that's a good 4 hour drive for me. However since this is still a planning phase I have plenty of time so it might be an option.
L190 is good for beginners, omnivorous, tough as nails, awesome looking, and just plain awesome. I keep mine with very aggressive fish and even at only 6" he holds his own very well!

L95s have been a out as strong as a tanks in my experience, but pseudocanthicus (l114,l25,l24) are very sensitive to water parameters and muchore difficult to keep (I have several species). The only 2 downsides to l95 are $$$$ an poop machines that eat constantly.
I think L-14 is a nice looking fish that is hardy and not so shy once established in a tank. I've had my goldie for about 7 years. When i feed my other fish he comes out to eat. They don't get bullied and will not back down from other fish. This is one of my favorite fish.
From the description of what your looking for I think the L14 fits the bill
They are carnivores and mine is out for food all the time even though he's in with aggressive fish.
The drawback is, they are $ and seem to grow slowly. I picked this one up at roughly 3" and he is only 6" after 3 years. I did find out that this one really likes algae wafers so maybe the growth rate will change in the future.
