im looking to find good tank mates for my red evil. so far florida gars haven't worked and neither have oscars. i want to get a female red devil maybe two but not sure if thats a good idea. any ideas or info would be great!!! thanks
Try a male texas of equal size and if they cross you will have a start on red texas or you could try other equal size and agressive ca cichlids Merry Christnas.
to be honest the best set up for an RD is as a solitary fish if you want success long term. they may go ok with others as juvies, but once they hit maturity, any others in there had better be able to kill or be killed.
either way you have dead fish.
of course it is 'possible' to find a peaceful RD that will get on with others ............ but then what's the point?
thanks for all the replies they are all helpful.... i think i might try to get a female RD maybe a little bigger than he is but cant seem to find one!!! (just my luck)
Red Devils are hard to put with tank mates. They usually are intolerant of anything, from tank mates, to heaters, filter intakes or thermometers. Good luck finding a female that he will be ok with. I'd also invest in a stealth heater, a digital thermometer and spare intakes.
I once had a breeding pair of JDs that made it with a RD. The key for me was giving them plenty of hiding spots where the RD couldn't get to them. Thing is, I'm sure that was the exception and not the rule. You're gonna have a hard time finding mates.
Mine is good with everything but Oscars. I tried Oscars twice and he hates them.
In my experience I believe that as the square footage increases the RD becomes more passive. Unless I have just been lucky for the last 3 years, aside from the two Oscars that have since been re-homed. When the RD flares up at a fish most of the others in the tank just sit there. The Oscars were the only ones that would flare back.
