Suggestions for 125 Gallon Aggressive Tank

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
You have them by themselves?
Well, when the male realized he was a beast he took dominance over the growout, so I had to move a few fish out, then he hit 3.5" and I had to isolate him from the remaining few, but now the female @ 3" is proving to be just as mean and territorial, so I plan on re-arranging things again, but I just paid my friend in beer and pizza to help me move over 150 gallons of tanks 2 days ago and I just don't have it in me to do anything else in the fishroom right now lol but yea, i'm still struggling to figure best tankmates for these little savages even at 3". ATM, they are with a 4.5"-5" male GT and a 2.5" and 3" Dovii and a few heavily armored cats. The male RTM is in a breeder net for a few more days until I decide whether he can live w/ my other smaller stage 2 CA-growouts (2" - 5") or if he will need to stay in the stage 3 growout tank w/ the 6" - 8" 'ers and bigger catfish. My money is on the biggest badasses.....these RTMs are unlike any aggressive fish I have ever seen. Ignorant, belligerent, fearless and downright ruthless.
Loiselli are really nice.

I wish I had a pair, along w/ the Friedreichstahli....supposedly my friend can get them in their shop,, but I have yet to call him back and find out if they came in. Mayans - Uropthalmus - are on my list too, the OP may find them to be quite enjoyable as well as Festae. but again rather beastly psychopathic monsterfish that may or may not tolerate tankmates.....could be a gamble. I have been hearing recently Loiselle's are somewhat mild in aggression compared to other Parachromis species, so your suggestion may just be his best bet for community

Id go maybe R/D, Midas or GT's are great if you like them, totally agree with other comments way to small for Dovii long term, my guy lives in a 375g and I'll be upgrading when I can, when they get big they really need huge tanks to thrive. Never had mini Dovii so can comment on them
Do you have a picture of this tank? I'd love to see it.

I agree with the amphilophus comment. Can't go wrong with a midevil, or so I'm told. Another one I've heard lots of good things about are black nasties.

Agreed. I love my midevil.

I agree, the tank is too small for dovii.
But many of the other cichlids would work.
I personally do not think its a good idea to mix any 1 Parachromis species, with another Parachromis species.
They either see the other species as competition (and you end up with a bunch of torn up cichlids), or a potential breeding partner and create hybrid fry, (which I consider a bad idea).
That said, if you were to try any other of the Parachromis, a 125 is really only big enough for a pair anyway (maybe a trio of 1 male, and 2 females as adults).
Of course I'd say the same about the tank being too small for any of the Amphilophus, other than maybe a trio, as adults.
