Hi
I will be starting up a 33G planted. It is 32x18x14
I would like some stocking recommendations.
I know that i want a really large school of something very colorful and a few Siamese Algae Eaters for sure.
thanks for any input

drop the siamese algae eaters: they get kinda big, and mean, plus only a few select species out of the many sold as SAE actually eat algae. For clean up, look into the various species of FW shrimp (neocaridina sp., bamboo shrimp, stuff like that).

If you want a "large" school: stick with the smaller more colorful fish. Neon/Cardinal Tetras (most of the shoaling tetras actually). I like Axelrod's Rasbora, but the harlequin and emerald eye are popular (be sure the check out all the different color morphs of harlequins).

Killifish (even though those can be expensive) and hatchet fish (I like marbled and emerald) are both good choices.

If you want to get a little bigger and not so much on the shoaling side you can get some swordtails or mollies (not my favorite, can't lie)

Could always try Otocinclus sp. as alternatives to SAEs.

the problem is that i already have 1 SAE that does indeed eat algae and i like the species very much, it is a must for me. he is not aggressive but is quite active therefore i need a shoaling species that does not get spooked easily.

i agree on the otos for algea. they stay small and look very nice in small groups. for schooling fish i would do rasboras, they look so nice in planted tanks. they have these new rummy nose rasboras that ive seen that are really nice.

Rasboras, danios, barbs and tetras. All often work well with SAEs.;)

:iagree:

I added some ghost ("glass") shrimp to my breeding tank as feeders, but have grown to love them. They're very interesting to watch and eat all of the food my fish don't!

I love Harelquin Rasboras but i am afraid that the SAE highly active nature might spook them and make them uneasy in their environment.
what do you think?
