I just go a 55 gallon tank as an early Christmas present and I cant decide what to put in it. I had originally settled on 2 polypterus senegalus and a couple of opaline gourami but then I found out I could keep an oscar in it. I like the oscar idea as they are more active, predatory, and can be taught tricks, but I dont like the idea of them redecorating my tank and being the only fish in a 4ft tank. Some one please help me decide or give me more ideas on what to put in my new tank.

A 75g is IMO a better tank size for an oscar. I'd consider other options. Where are you located in USA?

I'd go with something other than an Oscar. Before you know it, an Oscar won't even be able to turn around in a 55 gallon tank. It'll quickly outgrow a 55. I don't know much about the first fish you mentioned, but the gouramis would certainly be a good choice over the Oscar!

In a 55 an Oscar would need a lot of care, many water changes and high filtration. Unless you're willing to put in the extra time to ensure top water quality, you may want to pass on getting one. Plus they will redecorate to their liking, something you wouldn't want by the sounds of it. Oscars take a lot of commitment.

You could instead get a Jack Dempsey, some Convicts, Severums, Firemouths or any number of other cichlids if you wanted.

If you want to deliver the snail we'll be happy to take it at my job. I work in the biology department at East Carolina University and we could use it to show the students in the labs. I cant come get it because I dont have a car yet, still workin on that.

And on the other cichlids instead...I dont know. I really like the way jack dempseys look, I'm at my girlfriends house right now looking at one thats about 4 or 5 inches long but he seems a little skittish for my liking. You think its just this individual fish or is the common of the species?

I'm not from USA but if you go to www.applesnail.net, you may be able to find some people near you who own them and be able to give you the snails. You can only get these snails within your state with other hobbyists. They're banned from transport. The only Pomacea legal to ship is Pomacea bridgesii. The sender needs a permit to be able to do so. They grow to a golfball size only and aren't voracious plant eaters.

JDs are skittish by nature. Many aren't, but the majority seem to be.

You can even do electric blue Jacks' love them <3
