Suggestions for a planted 65 overhaul or addition

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
He likes all of the plants, driftwood, rocks and caves for sure. I have one indian almond leaf in there now, I could add a couple more. Outside of those I'm not sure what leaves would be brown... Ideas?

Oak is a safe choice as that is what most people seem to be using. I have some drying out right now, but they are not turning brown (at least not yet). I'll stockpile a bunch this fall.

Here's a thread documenting my tank's progress: http://www.monsterfishkeepers.com/forums/threads/my-discus-journey.648726/ Even if it's not this tank, I hope you get a chance to try discus down the line, it took me a while to get up the nerve to do it, but I'm so glad I did. They are easily the most rewarding fish I've ever owned.

Your tank looks great! I think they look so awesome with plants. I just do not like bare bottom tanks - they don't fit my aesthetic.

Some day I'd love them, but I don't think this is the tank for them.

Thanks - does oak affect water chemistry?

Thanks - like i mentioned, I use indian almond (catappa) but have never used oak. I can throw a few more of the IA leaves in there. I have a bunch. :)

Back here to ask about the rope fish. My LFS has them now, and they are about 6-8 inches long each. If I got three now, do you think would there be an issue with my (larger) rummy nose and my last few cardinals? Or should I wait until the tetras are gone? They look small now but I am not sure how quickly they grow or how likely they are to eat these guys.

they will get bigger rather quickly, but they cant eat large tetras to my knowledge, they get about 14 inch but not too big

I know they'll eat neon tetras but my current tetras are quite a lot larger than the neons. I've read really mixed reports about what kind of fish they will or won't eat. Some people have kept them with neons and there's been no problem and other say they've even cardinals. But then again my Cardinals are five years old and as big as you can see them. So it's kind of hard to figure out. I know part of it is the individual fish.
