as a mom imho I wouldn't let a 6 yr old have a wolf fish in their room... they can do some damage. same reason a piranha wouldn't work.. even though most are shy and boreing imho. i agree w/ something like a male con.. or maybe an EBJD? most kids like color and something that will interact once they get over not being allowed other "Cool" things, which is why Oscars are such popular kids fish. But thats just my 2cts. You work up to those types of fish.

Good point that I didnt think about! My son is incredibly responsible & trustworthy..I would be fine with him having a fish like that..his older sister..no. He has a hamster and always follows the rules. However my worry now would be friends-he had an older friend over once whom I had told not to touch the hamster- he opened the cage, touched him, got bitten, let the hamster out & the hamster almost got squashed.

Red tail sharks might work. They only get about 4 inches but in a 30 gallon tank you may have territory issues. One red tail shark and a small school of tiger barbs would be cool.

Red tail sharks get a lot bigger than 4 inches, I've seen some at the 10 inch mark. I have two in my tank and no territory problems.
