I have a shrimp tank that I'm starting to plant and would like to switch my crappy Walmart gravel out for black substrate.

I'm wondering if anyone has any suggestions for a cheaper black substrate. (also an online store to find it at as I have nothing close to me). It can be either sand or smaller sized gravel. Also, unfortunately I have no way to obtain 3M colorquartz at the moment.

Thanks for any info!!!

I like Estes 'black special" gravel.

I have that in one of our tanks....It came with the tank and looked nice so after the crushed coral I put it back in the tank and it looks great. Small gravel seems to look best with black for some reason. The few I've seen with larger black graval didn't have the same visual impact...

Not the greatest picture but might give you an idea what it looks like.

The crushed coral eventually settled down and is hardly notacable any more.

If you are planting it, I'd recommend Flourite black, or flourite black sand. This is a great media, and looks good. If not that, Eco-complete will work well also. These are both planted tank substrates, and will provide nutrients for the plants.

Thanks everyone for the suggestions. I think I'm going to scrap the ordering off the net idea, shipping gets pretty expensive. I'm going to wait until the next time I'm near a bigger city and find some then.

Take a pair of pliers to the mall and pull out the fingernails of those creepy looking kids. Nothing beats free, and you'll be doing the world a favor :D
