Its about 2 years old and about 5 inches long now, but the only thing it has been fed is driftwood and likely the occasional leftovers on the bottom of the tank. Its growth is great and colors are good, but i have been wanting to feed it a more varied diet. I have tried zucchini and left it in the tank for 3 days, wouldn't touch it. Was going to try some cucumbers next, but i did notice the other day that its taken an interest in the shrimp pellets I feed my cory cats. What would you all suggest? This royal is my favorite of all my fish and I want it to get more in its diet.

Try different veggies. Mine loves sweet potato. Also is he eats the shrimp pellets try sticking them into soft veggies like the zucchini.

My plecos and farowela didn't like zucchini at first either. Actually it's more I think they don't recognize it as food because once they did they love it. I had to try a few times (I never leave any part of it past 24hrs).

My BN's love it, even the juvies. I think I will try that shrimp pellets in the zucchini trick next and the sweet potato. thanks

I don't feed mine soft veggies. It just messes up the water and they don't really care for them.

I stick to hard veggies like carrots, sweet potato, white potato and turnips are just a few. As treats I feed them mushrooms, green peas, parsley and bell peppers just to name a few.

Repashy is a good alternative too. Just not the meat pie. Don't forget wafers are always a welcome treat as well. As long as he is eating that is a great thing

He does eat wafers occasionally but its in a mbuna tank at the moment and they tend to pick at the wafers. Don't worry I know mbuna can hurt the royal, but right now its asserted its dominance over all of them and its also twice the size. Also If 3 cory cats and 4 barbs can survive in there I'm not to worried about my royal.

I'll definitly try any of the above recommendations, I just want to give it a more varied diet. If it doesn't want to eat anything but wood and it keeps growing them I'm fine with it though. Thaks for all the suggestions.

I was given a bag of repashy morning wood it's the food he was going to market just for wood eating fish.
They like it but like all the repashy food it messes up the water so bad that's it's nothing but a PITA feeding it to them.
Mine also like the soilent green. It's just a treat though because of the mess it makes.
I use mainly NLS mega fish formula it's the best I've tried so far. Great results especially growth.

I'm feeding mine summer squash right now. My Watermelon Royal seems to really love it. Took him awhile to figure out it was food but I think it got curious due to my small Hypostmus pleco's eating it so it investigated and now it tears it apart. It likes eating the outer part first for some unknown reason.
