OK, so I'm finishing two rooms in my basement one will be my son's bedroom the other will be "The Fish Room". What I would like is suggestions and ideas from all who would like to have or have fish rooms, as to what features would be good to include.

Thanks all in advance.

If you are in a cold climate where it snows, I'd say a pellet stove, a love seat to sit on, and some kinda drain for when doing Wc's. If it were mine, I'd also add a neon sign. I'd also get a lil radio/cd player so you can chill and relax in the fishroom/mantown

 ya she squashed the plans I had to cut the 350g into the wall between the family room and our bedroom closet. The fish room is long overdue. Sold the gouramis and yes a utility sink with high volume faucet is a must.

What does your son need a room for? A bigger fishroom is a much better idea :headbang2

No, but seriously, have a powerful sink and faucet

When i remodel my house since i only keep feshwater fish i was thinking of doing a lfs set up with tanks stacked on top of each other and just one huge sump for all of them with a automatic water changer. The only problem i see is that if one fish gets sick they all do since it would be one giant sump.

I'd stay away from the lfs setup....One fish gets sick, then all WILL...Sucks too if the person is a breeder....Clean water is a must....

As for a fishroom setup....I like keeping 100g-180g tanks....Longest is 96 inches...My other tanks are 4ft....Pretty simple with filtration....AC101's on everything....On the big setups, I wil add a single canister, or two, and a sump of some kind(homemade of course).....Breeders are your basic 55's with either a stone-wall bubbler or an AC of some small size....

I would consider plumbing several "washing machine boxes" in the wall low (like 12" off finished floor), it would be very easy to set up drip systems, and emergency overflows on tanks. They could be hidden easily by covering them with sheet rock, or hidden behind tank stands.

I have a 40 gal tank stacked under a 75 gal and it is a major pain in the ass to clean, also filters do not work like they are designed (unless you use HOB). I would not recommend this approach.

Also, I would bet your son would be just as happy in a tent in the yard.

i'm serious

Check with your local Home Depot. They carry a Z-Beam rack made by Edsal. It's 72"x18"x72" and can hold up to 7500 lbs. evenly distributed on the the three shelves. The lady at Edsal told me that Home Depot can special order anything that is in Edsal's catalogue. They are really sturdy and will save you the time and expense of overbuilding stands.

First carefully calculate how many electric outlets you will need...Then install twice that many.
Leave room for a chair, theres barely room to walk in my fishroom,I love it but some people like to sit.

Tile or vinyl floor spills happen. Ive seen some carpeted fishrooms you gotta have self confidence for that.Paint of any kind on the floor will look like crap in no time.

Install the sink and seating first. If theres a blank spot a tank will appear in it like magic trust me on this one.

all tanks well covered and a dehumidifyer.

bathroom paint or mildew resistant paint,go with the gloss its easier to wipe down.

A common sump is great make sure you have a quarantine tank to isolate new fish for a month or so.

Its cheaper to heat the room than heat the tanks.
