Suggestions for pump for 700 gallon system

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
I've read mixed reviews on the Jebao's. From what I understand, they are really efficient, but not so reliable.

Pumps are the heart of your tank, so I would be careful to not be penny-wise and pound-foolish.

I personally think the 10x turnover rule is overkill and if I were to be blunt about it, it's total nonsense.

I run about 2.5x on my 770G and although I don't keep huge fish, I wouldn't say that I'm lightly stocked and I've never had any measureable ammonia or nitrite readings.

The larger the tank, the less turnover you will typically need. Look at some of he huge public aquariums, and they have like 1 turnover PER DAY. I can guarantee you that they are not running 63 million GPH on the 6.3 million gallon Ocean Voyager Aquarium in Atlanta...and they are keeping whale sharks.

If the budget for your pumps is tight, I would suggest running two Max Flo 2400. They will get you around 5x turnover, which is plenty. If your water parameters are bad with that type of flow, you either don't have enough bio-media, you need to do more frequent water changes or you are overstocked. All the flow in the world won't help if you are trying to keep too high of a bio-load in a tank...water changes are the only thing that will solve for that problem. And if you decide you still want more flow you could always add an additional pump when the funds are available.

I know people will disagree, but those are my 2 cents.
I agree with you as well. turnover through the sump is the important thing

I run the dct 6000 x2 and find them to be quite nice, my system is only 300 (without sump) and my stocking is probably comparatively light.

The jebaos are very weak too. Add a couple elbows and some head height and they loose a ton of flow.

I would deff shoot for 10x turnover with rays... My one tank that has about 6x turnover is always a little dirty and trying to play catchup with the waste in the tank

Wow came home to another dead jebao... This is prob the 5th one that has died on me... I am also on the market for a new pump now... Very tempted to get a pondmaster 4800 again since i know they work good and are powerful

i personally like the little giant, iwaki, reeflo & quiet one pumps and
is what i mainly use on most decent sized tanks. i have never had
any of these pumps fail on me ever to date. ive used other pumps also
like rio+/hf, jebao, sicce, supreme, marineland, hydor and etc etc.
but ive had those fail on me at least once.

Okay this is testament enough for me, pass.

If you were considering DC pumps, I have had good results with waveline. Their gen1 model had issues with the controller but the issues have been worked out with the gen2 models.

My family members use that, as well as DC's from Deepwater and Ecotech and have also been very happy. Quiet and powerful, but only time will determine reliability.

I think I am going to buy a single pondmaster 4800, I just realized that I probably cant fit 2 bulky pumps in the 55g food grade barrel I am using as my equipment chamber otherwise I would just buy 2 of the laguna's. So I think if I get the pondmaster 4800 and add the 3600 gph rated jebao powerhead I should be good enough. This tank isn't going to be my pretty display tank by any means so a little dirty water doesn't bother me that much, and I mean again I run 2 mag 1800's and the 3600 powerhead on my 400, the pumps are about 8-10 feet of head and one feeds through the UV sterilizer and the k1 reactor so I am not getting much in terms of turnover. Water is fine too, not gin or crystal clear but good enough for me and anyone else looking at the rays for sure.

Any final thoughts guys? Pulling the trigger this weekend.
