^ yes i saw dirty jobs too :D

But concrete use in a tank means pH spike out of control. Also creates calcium level issue, hardness and disolved oxygen level issues.

isn't that only if it isn't fully cured?

Only if it's not coated with a hard core sealant. Even cured, it will still leach calcium out of the mix into the water. That is what leads to the pH spike.

One zoo I worked at skipped the sealant step and lied to me about it when making some bigger displays. I kept having pH spikes above 11 when I tried to get the tanks cycled and couldn't figure out why until I got into some major water chemistry break down. Had to dump them and strip the displays back to bare concrete and seal them. Pushed back the open date by months.

Yeah, I'm having a hard enough time convincing the girlfriend to let me take over the dinning room for wy tank. If I show up with a concrete mixer, I think she might blow a fuse. I will just stick with the pvc idea. I went to home depot and made the base structure of what I was going for with 1/2" pipe and 90 degree bends. Now I only have two more questions? What kind of "putty" do you guys use to hide the pvc pipe between rocks and what type of drill bit do you guys use to drill your rock (masonry, wood)? Thanks for all the great advice. Another question for krj-1168 how big of a refugium would I need for my setup? The original sump idea was 36"X16"X16" with three chambers

Masonry drill. I usually just let the rock hide the pipe, then let algae grow over it where rock didn't do the job. It takes about a week or so.
