Suggestions on my tank...

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
I have the small aggronite stuff, from experience with the cost and use, just go with sand.

Either will work having two incase of a failure is a good idea.

The cats are great, but depends on what type you get many get large. If you go with small it will be nice. The key is not to mix mbuna and anything else.

yeah i wont mix any mbunas in there, i have only really seen one i like. like i said before the only non malawi fish i like are fronts, brichardis and calvus, i really wish there was a way to mix one of each of those in there but i wont if it cant be done, still haven't had my question answered about how many fish in a 135. and about the gravel i can get the crushed coral for 90 cents a pound and regular sand for like 1.20 a pound so im leaning towards the coral

Bala sharks i always wanted some they were on the top of my list but my tank was way to small your tank should be the right size maybe.

The choice of fish is the problem. Without realisticly know the species I can not give you a number. If am moving 7 fronts, 9 buffaloheads and 5-9 comps for my 135... FULL

My mbuna I easily have 50 full grown, when I put my sump on, I could do way more.

Haps/peacocks- all males 15 depending on the grow out size of the fish.

The not mixing Mbuna with Haps and Peacocks is not a hard and fast rule. Yellow Labs go pretty well with Haps and Peacocks. I also have a Red Top Zebra and an OB. The RTZ is an absolute wuss. The OB is the king of the tank until my gigantic yellow lab comes out but he only fears the lab because of the size. The lab is not aggressive at all.

Also, as far as plecos are concerned, I have a 110 gallon with Crushed Coral Sand and lots of limestone rock work. I currently have 4 plecos. 1 small Bristlenose, 1 small Tiger Pleco (Panague Maccus), 1 L236, and 1 Green Phantom L200. So far, so good. The Phantom is incredible. Totally Fearless of the aggressive fish or some exposure to the light (the flashlight will scare him into dark corners but he has no problem cruising around for food in the light.

In terms of African cats, I have a few of those as well. I currently have 4 Syno Multipunctatus, 1 S. Decorus and 1 S. Ocellifer. In retrospect I shouldn't have bought the Ocellifer (impulse buy because I really wanted some Synos) and the Decorus was sold to me as some other species and cheap. Once I found out that it could get 10 inches I was not happy. Both of which I am planning to get rid of over the summer and add two more Multipunks. I really wanna breed them.

If you do a hap peacock tank then do just that... Start mixing too much and you lose fish. May work short run, but life time not so great. I would either go with a tang tank with fronts and some julies and comps. OR the peacock hap tank and call it a day. Then you can still have a pleco. All these fish would prefer the sand.

Sand peacock tanks get messy! put a sponge around your filter intake valve, that's all I can tell you lol... trust me it gets messy. I've found that crushed coral works best with all africans.

Yes fish can do fine in other substrates. I would recommend sand. Peacocks sift the sand as do fronts. They fish can sift other substrate but not with as much success.

After I learned not to have the intake for filters right near the bottom, I have not have a problem since. In my sump setups it has never been a problem.

Labs and other fish maybe more peaceful, but they are still a part of a group that is overall way more aggressive. I would suggest that you stay away, because these fish have it in them to be overly aggressive. This can mean that many fish of the same species can work, and other can not.

There are so many choices of fish if you stay with only haps and peacocks as well.

Here are peacocks

Read through and you will find many smaller haps to mix with peacocks for a much higher number than 15.

i will most likely end up using crushed coral, and my lfs they have 3 different grain sizes and i think i will mix 50 pounds each of medium and fine and see how that goes.
