Suggestions / Opinions on Additional Stock

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Much obliged folks. After doing some research on the suggestions, I think I will try a rainbow. Not to big, pretty, and should fit in nicely with the rest of the setup.

I know Jewel's are from Africa, and can be feisty, but any thoughts on if a single specimen could work as well? The jewel and rainbow aren't that big, so the bio load shouldn't get out of hand?

Update, just for the heck of it.
I bought a juvenile rainbow and jewel.
I spent a lot of time at the jewel tank trying to pick one that seemed less aggressive than the rest.
Put both fish together in 10 gal quarantine tank.
1st 48 hrs, everything is hunky dory.
After 72 hours, rainbow has no tail and missing large chunk of dorsal fin......
Jewel goes back to shop.

So I look around and spy a nice looking 4" chocolate cichlid seemingly co-existing with a juvenile severum. Both fish look nice.
So I grab the chocolate and bring him home to the quarantine tank.

Been a little over a week now and I am glad I picked up the chocolate.
Somewhat drab appearance at first glance, but if you sit still and pay attention you can literally see it change colors right in front of your eyes.
Mine will go from brown to more yellow to having redish fins within 5-10 seconds, very, very cool.

It and rainbow are getting along, rainbow's tail has grown back about 50%.
Looking forward to getting both fish in the display tank.

Thanks again for responses and to those of you who took the time to send me PM's.

Be Well,

Ork
