My tank had a small ammonia problem for a few days. It spiked up to 10mg/l, I did 50% water changes daily and treated with bio bombs untill it came back to 0mg/l. Now my Oscars have been having a fat sulk at the bottom of the tank for almost a week now? I have kept up with doing 25% water changes every 3 days. They still feed as well as ever and eat everything as Oscars do, they well race to the front of the tank when I go near the tank and beg for food like normal. My ph is 7 and my ammonia is now 0 and the temp is 26Deg. I have two Tiger Oscars one is about 250mm the other is about 200mm a Fire eel that is still only about 200mm and one pleco about 200mm long in a 400L tank that is 1.200mm X 0.600mm X 0.600mm. I have had my air pump going at about 300L/ph and the tank is planted so think O2 is ok. Any ideas are welcome as I have only kept fish for not even one year yet and this was my first emergency.

Cheers for you input:nilly::nilly::nilly:

They may be bummed out with the crappy water quality.
Oscars need clean water. I do 75% water changes twice weekly. Oscars eat alot and crap alot. From experience, they dont do well with alot of change. Your recent regimen of water changes and temp fluctuations to bring your tank up to proper may have stressed them out.
If they arent gasping and they're eating and swimming around during feeding time, sounds like they are just pouting due to the recent unpleasantness.

What filtration are you running? What are bio bombs?
Thats alot of fish for 100gal tank, it is recomended 1 oscar per 75gal tank and 125gal for two full grown adults. How big are your and the eel?

Bio bombs are floating balls full of ammonia eating bacteria to boost filtration of ammonia. my filters are 2 cf1200 aqua one filters. All the fish are only young, Os are not even a year old and fire eel is only small too. Saving up for a 6 or 7 foot tank in the mean time (and letting dust settle of my wifes shock to set up costs of my 4 footer).

you have to sort of view oscars as a dog somewhat. if a dog is sick, or just worn out, they'll often times just relax for a while. being as they have a boats load of personality, maybe the oscars just wanted to relax, or are just moody. but the water quality will definitely down them if its not what they want to tollerate. Id just water change, and let it go from there.

Wow, I thought I was psycho water changin' guy, but as it turns out, it is you. Do you adjust your water temp before adding it? I don't. 50% every 6 days, straight cold water.

I have more than Oacars in that 210. Two plecos, one 15" and one 12" add to the psychosis. I have foung that in order to maintain color, growth and general well-being(5-10ppm nitrate) it must be this way. All told there approx 45 fish in this tank, most are over 6".
Psycho? Maybe. Do my fish sulk? Yes, sometimes, but not from poor water quality.
BTW, no, I dont adjust water temp before water change. Thats why I have so many babies in the tank...well, they are in there for a while anyway.:D

I am confused. Why do you add straight cold water??? I try to adjust my water temp before I add it. Is it best to just add straight cold??? My well water is very very cold in the winter???
