I have sometimes let things bite me to see how it feels. Nothing venomous of course but when I first got into snakes I let my gopher bite me so that I could no what to expect and not be worried about it anymore.

well that makes perfect since, letting it gnaw on you for minutes does not! haha

Is there any reason to get bitten by a pet snake that doesn't involve "screwing up"? I mean seriously, you get bit because you weren't careful enough, didn't read your animal right, didn't take the proper precautions, weren't paying attention, in general screwed up.....

Why would you brag about screwing up?:screwy:

When my own stupidity causes me or others harm I am embarrassed, even ashamed, I don't brag about it.

It was entirely my fault when I got bit, but when I tell people I did get bit by a like 9' burm no one believes me until I show them pics because I have no scars to prove it. I'm not embarrassed one bit. I chalked it up as experience that I can pass onto others.

I bet a 9' Burmese bite is quite painful, python teeth are not fun to mess with

I think this is a tad bit reckless, regardless of the severity or type of toxin in any particular venom. You dont know how your body is going to react. If you are allergic or sensitive to a particular compound you can go into anaphylaxis and die. People die from bee stings, and that is miniscule compared to the amount of venom a snake bite delivers.

especially if you let it chew on you

I would not encourage this behavior. my .02

Scientific reasons. I have always said if I ever get bitten by a venomous snake I will do my best to document for as long as I can, that includes pictures, video whatever else. That doesn't mean I want to get bit but if it happens may as well take advantage of the situation.
I did this when my carpet python bit me, took pictures of the bite periodically and noted how it felt and affected me. The bite itself wasn't bad but he held on so tight that my finger actually bruised and was very sore afterwards, has led me to some interesting theories I may test in the future... And for the record, I saw it coming... it was a feed response. I was in the process of feeding him (with tongs) and accidentally dropped the mouse in his water dish...well once it's in there he wants nothing to do with it so I was trying to get it out real quick with the tongs and I saw it coming... I even said "don't do it...." as I was watching him sizing up my hand lol I didn't jerk back though because I knew he would have struck and had me before I even had a chance and then I would have a MUCH worse bite to deal with.....

And when we show off bites laughing about it in such cases with non lethal animals it is to down play the fear. So many people are terrified of being bitten by snakes even if they aren't afraid of the snake itself.... and it's good to show people that it's really not a big deal, at least with most snakes it's not. One thing I am going to start incorporating into my reptile talks at schools is snake bites. A friend of mine gave me this tip and says he always takes a reliably pissy snake to his talks and allows it to bite him in front of the children while continue to talk and educate, completely ignoring the bite and showing them that it is nothing scary or even painful (again this depends on the snake.... a 14ft retic bite ain't quite the same as a little black racer)

In this case it could be to document a sort of worst case scenario type thing... or he just didn't want to force the thing off right away assuming it would let go on it's own... it's possible 5 minutes is an over statement..maybe, maybe not. In any case it shows you how bad a hoggy bite CAN be... but thats a very rare occasion.

Seems the snake chewing had a more serious effect than a fast bite , glad i own 2 hogs :)
