I'm looking for some advice on setting up my sump for a 300 gal tank. The sump has dual Biotowers and the "resevoir" is around 40 gals.

Mostly the info I'm looking for is about the media. What is the best media to use? For the towers and the resevior. It came with two rolls of media in the towers (see pics) and crushed coral in the bottom. I removed the crushed coral becuase I don't want to raise the ph any higher than it already is. I replaced the coral with potscrubbers, but on second thought maybe they should go in the towers?

Any advice, from experience, is appreciated.

Cheers

yup the pot scrubbers should go in the towers. also I would make a drip pan to go above the scrubbers in the tower to spread the water and alow it to drip over all the scubbers evenly.

That would make more sense.
Also what is coiled up looks like what might be used as prefilter material to go over said drip plate. Very interesting sump though

No need for a drip pan; there are spinning spray bars in each tower.

So would the potscrubbers work better than the coil? What should I put in the bottom? Lava rock?

Thanks so far.

what are you using as a prefilter? the coiled up stuff???? thats a cool looking setup, i'd love to see it in action.

I could leave the coil in for a prefilter I guess. It's over a foot wide. I guess I could put the put scrubbers in the tower and use filter floss as a pre-filter. Don't know if that's any better than the coil. I'm looking for suggestions. How would you set this up? I don't have any sump experience. I always used cannisters and HOB's.

C'mon guys, somebody must have some experience with this type of set-up.

Thanks man.

If anyone knows anybody on the site, that might be able to help me with this, I'd appreciate it if you could direct them to my thread. Sorry if I sound a little impatient, I've been trying to set this tank up for a long time now. I promise there will be lots of pics when done - no promise on quality of pics though.

Cheers

Media is really personal preference, it will work as you have it in the photos, or like the others suggest with the pot scrubbers in the tower. I've never seen the rolled up stuff you have in the towers at the moment so I cant comment much on how good it is or whats its best used for?

I use scoria(lava rock) in the submersed part of my sump because its cheap ;) Having such a large area to fill you may want to look at something similar. The larger the area for the media the less importance there is on the media having insane amounts of surface area (ie. the expensive brand name medias) ;)
