So I was wondering, I have no algae in my big tank, 240 gal, 6 ft by 3 ft. But in the sump filter for the tank, I have what seems like brown algae, on the heaters pumps and gravel, and amongst some plants I keep in the sump with a light. I also have a few snails and shrimp. Should I think about removing this algae? Or just leave it as is? I mean it helps to keep the water clean, and I can't see it doing any harm. And no, the shrimp and snails don't seem to be eating enough algae to keep it from growing. Just want some thoughts and opinions. Thanks.

2 things to consider, in order for the algae to grow, it must take up nutrients such as nitrogen.

Ive heard some people argue that you need to remove the algae in order to remove the nitrogen.

If the algae is growing, great. but if it dies, it will decompose and negatively impact your water quality.

If algae is growing, you have excess nutrients and could either let the algae grow and perhaps help water quality or become food for your critters. If the algae spreads too much, it could grow on your plants and effectively slowly kill them. Since it shows you have excess nutrients in the water you could grow more plants. I personally love growing plants such as ratala, grows quick and easy to propagate. Unless you have your water parameters at 0, providing light should grow at least some algae, so its more of what you want to do. I suppose its more unsightly than it is harmful
