Hello I have a question I just bought a 380 gallon acrylic aquarium (crystal clear )used and it has one 1 1/2 over flow from the factory do you think that is enough and how much water can I put threw it thanks

The amount that will go through depends on several variables:

1) is it 1.5" internal or external diameter
2) how far is the drop from the outlet at the tank to the outlet in the sump
3) will the flow be full siphon or not
4) will the drop be unimpeded (no bends, twists, etc.)
5) will the entire pipe be 1.5" at every point in item #2
6) enough for what? No one knows your bio load or what pumps you plan to use to return water to the tank. Without that, we're guessing unless you want to specify a turnover rate.

The more you answer, the easier and more accurate a response can be.

Assuming you have a 1.5" ID, the drop is 5 feet, the flow will be full siphon, the drop is unimpeded. the pipe is 1.5" in all places, the pipe can handle 5,930 gph.

However, it will handle significantly less and be very noisy if the pump can't supply that much as it won't be full siphon.

posts 4 -10 are a multi-part explanation of sump planning. It will help you think through all the questions Drstrangelove is asking you about above. None of it is particularly difficult, but it's a lot to think about all at one time--it gets confusing.

So these posts in the thread above are an attempt to clarify all this sump set up stuff, and help people think through what we need to know to answer questions like this.

Take a look at it and see if it helps.

I agree with what is said above.

If you want my personal opinion on what I'd do, I would drill another 1.5" drain and a 2" drain. Then, add ball valves to the 1.5" drains to set them up herbie style and use the 2" drain for an emergency drain.

For sump size, I wouldn't go smaller than a 90gal but I recommend you try to find a used 125gal tank to use for the sump.

With that setup, I would recommend two or three 1" returns and pumps sized so that you get about 3000gph after head loss.
