Sump Assistance

The top of the three pics is the bio media chamber for pot scrubbies etc. The next one looks like the area where you put those into the chamber. The bottom one looks like a shelf or a top. Not sure.

The sand bed is a bad idea for a sump, IMO.

First pic: 4 holes in the top, that's where water enters the sump. There's a black plate with holes, put a filter pad there for mechanical filtration. If it's easy to get to and change out. If not, you will have to put the filter pads later in the sump.
Second pic: That's probably an access hole to dump your bio-balls into that area. Don't use pot scrubbies in there if your not going to be able to pre-filter (pic 1) they will just clog. Use bio balls if you have the $$$.
Third pic: The access hole, open. Close it when full, I would tip this on end when filling to maximize the amount of bio-balls you can get in there.
Fourth pic: That's possibly a stand for inside the sump? Ya have to sort of move it around to see where you think it fits and take another couple pictures.
In the first pic there's a couple slots on the far left of the sump. Those slots are probably for the mechanical filter. It's basically two panels with holes in them with some filter pad material sandwiched between and then the whole thing is slid into those slots. Water passes through those panels and is filtered by the pad. I have this on one of my sumps and it's very easy to maintain, I love it.

Quick question? Where's the pump? I didn't see any holes for an external pump? Are there any holes or do you have a submersible pump?

If this is freshwater I would advice against a dsb. If you really want another method of filtration in there, go plants. There are some low light plants like water wisteria that will survive in most set ups without any extra effort needed.

I though the same thing about that extra plastic peice, but anyway I angle it, it wont fit into the sump. It is too large. Also, I was wondering what those slots were. The mechanical filtration makes sense now.

As far as a pump I was thinking of using a submersible one. There is a hole drilled on the far left of the tank but it is not visible in the pics. I have an 1100 gph pump, but I worry that it would draw water from the sump faster than the siphon could pull it. I may need a massive siphon if I use that pump. Would 1100 gph be too much flow for a sump?

I've always wanted to try out an algae turf scrubber. I'd go that route just becuase regardless of fresh or salt it's supposed to be pretty effective at controlling nitrates

It looks very appealing and easy to maintain. I hear the DSBs are very effective but they can mess up your tank if you disturb the sand bed.

I'm worried more about the lack of variety for micro organisms to choose to sift the sandbed in freshwater opposed to saltwater. From what I've read it's pretty detrimental to the success of the sandbed to have those little critters, and you just dont have the variety in freshwater.
