Sump bio media

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
I use a wide variety of media ranging from pot scrubbies to matrix. I figure that this gives the BB strains whatever they prefer and increases the biodiversity of my colony

Not the cheapest but I don't have the luxury of as big of sumps as other people. For my 300 gallon running on a 55 gallon sump I have a marine pure bio block, 3.5lbs of matrix, filter floss, and some medium foam along with matala mat shoved in there for filler. First through a 7"x12" 100 micron sock, then through floss, then everything else.

I am thinking about dropping down to a 50 micron sock to try it out. Logically to me, the less particles that reaches the bio media that can clog it up the better.

I don't understand having a sock plus floss, but then I use lava and Fluval ceramcic media, and scrubbies. and sponge filters too.
Lava is easy and cheap but takes 100x much more room than commercial biomedia of the same capacity.

Actually 100x is real conservative. Purigen is probably 1000x more efficient than lava. It does cost a lot more.

I am also running a fluidized sand filter on my 3-tank 210g system, and I believe it is the most efficient based on media cost.
Just 3lbs of sand is enough for a normal 300g system. My 90g system surely has 12 lbs of lava and gravel and bio-rings. It works no better, even though under half the water, and way under half the bioload.
