Sump Design

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Ha Ha! You asked for it!

Definitely snoop around and look at other designs. If you have a void fill it with plants, snails, heater, more filter sponge, & a power head(they can develope dead zones/becoming stagnant)...good place to raise fry if it's safe from heavy suction. Forgot what kind of fish this is for but your wet/dry looks huge! Good Luck!!!

My thoughts exactly.

You guys should really do your research first. Submerged ceramic media is superior to water dripping over conventional plastic media. Besides, ceramic media will give you more surface area than you will ever need. Just because you expose it to more oxygen doesn't mean you will have more bacteria. Bacteria will be equal to your bioload.

Not only that, you can run a completely silent sump. There is no need to have the sound of water falling in your sump.

Somebody should tell these guys they don't know what they're doing right? :screwy: :wall:

Why not get rid of all the baffles and dividers all together, and follow the designs above? I ditched the idea of a typical wet/dry sump with dividers and drip trays a long time ago. Sure they work, but there's much more effecient ways to run a sump. It will also be much easier/cheaper to build.

Personally, I would put an airstone under the bio media (two reasons, it gives some turbulence to the water, helping to avoid dead spots in the media, and it increases the o2 in the water, which is not a bad thing. If you have to do prolonged maintainance on the tank, you will be very glad you had an airstone in the sump. And I would use the open area for floating plants, like giant duckweed or hornwort.

And I agree, ceramic media is the way to go. I use broken up terra cotta pots. :)

jcardona1 - Those aren't really designs. I really am not sure what kind of insanity is going on in some of those pics.

LOL what do you mean, in the sumps? Just because you don't understand what is going on doesn't mean it doesn't work ;)

As I said, they are not designs. They are just pictures of stuff with no explanation whatsoever. Never said they don't work. Just saying from what I see-

Step 1- put big bags of some white stuff in an acrylic box with lots of bulkheads. There are some tubes and a pump involved sometimes. Put those wherever they fit.

Step 2- ????

Step 3- Profit. I mean filtration.

Didn't know I was supposed to give a step-by-step tutorial.

They're only pictures of sumps that use fully submerged ceramic media. Works like any other sump really. Water goes in, flows through media, gets pumped back into tank. Result? Happy fish :)

I am glad you find me amusing. The OP is looking for ideas on Sump design.
Simply posting a non detailed pic and saying "do this" with no description whatsoever is not particularly helpful.

Here, do your sump like mine. Simple right?

Is there a name for this type of setup so he can research it further?
