i notice lots of detritis in my 45g sump building up. i vaccum all the time but it is a pain in the ass. is there a fish that i can get and put in there or would the usual janitorial crew work out?

i am going to try to put one of my baby mollies in the sump and see what happens. any other suggestions?

I'd say that the mollies would make the situation worse not better. If I were going to put a detriovour in my sump I'd go for a cucumber. Just remember it's there if you ever have to treat the tank.
Cheers
Max

Oh, and that still won't end your chores but, it will lock up more nutrients.

do you run a filter sock? it will stop more nutreant carrying particals from getting to the stuff in the first place.

do you mean the prefilter sponge in the overflows or a sock on the end of the overflow tube?

because i have prefilters on both tanks and prefilters on the return pumps

in the main tank if there is any detritus buildup i find the herms eating it before long. i figured it wouldnt make a difference if they were in the main system or the sump.

Why not just build a deep sand bed, that way you can take out some of the nitrates with anarobic bacteria possibly put in a few plants to help out as well?

What goes in, must come out. Haven't you ever seen a cuke poo? Your best bet is to vaccume the sump every other month & be done with it. If you run a filter sock, you must change them weekly, if not sooner & have a back up.
