Sump flow

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
The only problem that I see is that the chamber the pump is sitting in does not give you much wiggle room for evaporation. With a sump the main tank is not affected because of the overflow. So when water evaporates the level in the sump goes down. If you don't keep an eye on it at all times you run the risk of running the pump dry and burning it out. Just my 2 cents.

Good point. I saw that too, but forgot to mention it.

Yeah it is a problem, I check it everyday and top it up at night. I have a 55g laying in the garage but I don't know if I can get it into the stand.

UPDATE:

I changed my return pipe from 1/2" to 1" and what a difference. My overflow pipe is 1 1/4" which then T's off to 2 3/4 pipes (1 for skimmer and 1 for fuge). I had a ball valve on the fuge side to limit the flow which was half way closed. Well now I have changed my return pipe I have to run it nearly all the way open or the overflow can't keep up. The only problem I have now is there is a lot of flow in my fuge but with out a bigger sump I can't do anything about it.

Why did you reduce your overflow to 3/4? I would run the 1 1/4 all the way and put both in the skimmer section. Steal some of your flow off your return pump to feed the fuge. This will keep crap out of your fuge and deep sand bed.

That's my plan when as we are moving house soon and I will change the setup when everything is moved and where I want it in the new house. The overflow pipe 1 1/4 all the way to the sump then it changes to 3/4 when it splits.
