I got a 120 gallon for Christmas and it came with a sump. Looks like it is easy enough to set up, but what I need to know is how I keep it from flooding if the power goes out?? Thank you for your help!

you could do a gravity return then it will never flood, or you could have valbs

if the overflows/bulkheads are set up correctly water will drain from your main tank and empty into the sump until they meet the air and then it won't drain any further. just make sure your sump water is at the correct level to make up for this if it were to happen.

What is a gravity return?

Is there a post or a site that will explain sumps to novice like me to understand?

Thanks.

If your water level is correct it won't flood. When i set mine up i was looking at it to complicated.Once the level looked right to me with the pump running i just unplugged the pump and left it go.Didn't overflow so i just put a piece of tape were i had the water line.

does the tank have overflows?

We need pix to help you...:D

Read the stickies at the top of this forum and the DIY forum, they'll help a bunch.

Gravity feed is putting the sump higher than the tank, pump water up to it and letting gravity flow the water back to the tank. Which can give you the same flooding problems if not set-up properly too.

Proper design, over-flow(s) and anti-syphon holes in the right places help take care of flooding problems.

Any questions, just ask ;).

Thanks guys. Looks like I will put hubby to work on it today and see what happens! I'll post pics when it is all done. Thanks again. Merry Christmas!

Hubby wants to use PVC pipe to make the return and wants to know if regular PVC glue is ok to use or if there is something else? Thanks.
