That doesn't sound "minimal maintenance" to me at all. It'll work great, and if you like changing / cleaning things in your sump for mechanical filtration, then go for it. But, you could get water just as clean with less parts and less maintenance.
Movement of water through my sump would not be enough to keep K1 moving. If it were, then I'd already have it, and I'd be telling "K1 DUDE. ONLY way to go!"
In my sump, I'd have to add some baffles to keep the K1 in an area, then I'd have to have some kinda air pump, or possibly powerhead, to keep the K1 moving. And I'd have to experiment with 2-3 different output pumps to get just the right amount of K1 movement to all the corners of the chamber in the sump. I looked into all that.
