what or is i best to place media in a sump

a picture would be great :D

the media i have just need to know were to put it

bio balls x 100
jap mat 2ft sq
alafrog 15 kg
efimech 14 lites
substrate pro 28 lites

sump size is 6x2x2

Mechanical filtration first. Coarsest to finest
Bio media next. If preferential order.

I think you will need some finer mecahical than just the jap mat,il be doing jap mat first then coarse then medium then fine sponges then some alphagrog then a drip plate over a about a thousand bioballs and some more alphagrog at the bottom and then a fine polishing pad, i know its overkill but why not if i have the room, i got the 30mm bioballs balls for £30 off ebay mate hope this helps

Its surprising when you put it in the sump how much more you need,i put the bioballs and 30kg of alphagrog and some scrubbies in and mine was about three quarters full and i had room for all the mech too.

I'm going to have to have my last return part of the sump fairly deep with water as i need to cover the 3 x pumps 2 x heaters and lots of different probes

i was thinking of having the sump half full with a over flow pipe near the top

I use an over flow pipe on all my sumps! I run my over flow pipe out side to the yard so no more over filling my tank during water changes

One issue I have with the over flow is: if it's too low you will drain too much water when power goes out. Then when the pumps kick on you wont have enough water in your sump to fill the tank back up! Keep that over flow pipe as high as possible.

good point i was thinking about putting the over flow pipe at about 22inch from the bottom

I couldn't tell you how high my overflow line is, but my sumps always run fairly full.

i was going to run my sump as full as possable then if the power goes the over flow should take care of it as it will be be 50mm
