alright. so after a few disappointments with not being able to get the new tanks that i want i might have finally ran into the deal ive been looking for .. $1000 CAD for a 220 gallon glass tank and a stand which is worth over $900 itself .. only a little over a month old. so seemed like a pretty good deal to me already however filtration lighting etc needed to be factored in after that price so i mentioned it to him and he told me he would hook me up a little. he would throw in a 4ft 4 bulb t6 light and if i wanted to use a sump for filtration he would throw in a 100 gallon fiberglass tank for it. this is what he said about the sump: (i've never used a sump and know nothinggg about them so not even sure what he means by this so i'm looking for help .. what does this mean and with this what else will i need to buy to get this 220 gallon hooked up with this sump:

"If you wanted to use a sump I would throw in a 100 gal fibrelass tank, it has the baffles and a bubble trap built in"

so as i said .. what does this mean and what would i have left to buy in order to hook this all up? .. the tank he has he had set up as saltwater so its drilled with water tight powerheads but i will be converting this to a fresh water tank .. not quite sure how to do this yet but ya .. any and all help would be appriciated

the 100 was the sump it's put under the 220 , the sump will filter the water , it's connects to the 220 by hoses that come from overflows on the 220 to the sump . really a fun project not hard to do but a good canister filter would work simply

just reviewed it but still very confused as i dont even technically know what he already has done with this 100 gallon. if anyone knows from what he said what he has done and what else i would need to pick up to finish it itd be great.

hes offering to throw in an empty sump tank with the sale. it sounds like it already has the vertical partitions in the tank for the media and pump housing areas, so its about halfway done for you.
you would still need to buy a return pump and media for she sump.
if the tank is not drilled, you will also need some kind of overflow (either box, PVC, or drilled), as well as PVC or flex tubing for the overflow and return plumbing.

it really sounds a lot more complicated than it is.

As you research sumps, their design and use, you will see he is giving you the cheapest part of the sump.
Basically a compartmentalized container.
The money starts really rolling out when you get into pump selection.
As with all things, the more research you do, the greater your chances of success, at the lowest cost.

well he had the tank set up for saltwater so he has it drilled already for powerheads .. since i'm using it for freshwater, would I be able to convert these holes somehow to be used for the sump to save me some time and trouble as opposed to using some sort of overflow .. or? i havent even seen the tank or sump yet .. which is why im asking these questions. if i had seen the sump i could figure out what it meant but im still confused. also i'm assuming if he has this sump already built .. i assumed he used it therefor probably has a pump also. not sure if its included but if it is or isn't ... can someone tell me what kind of pump i'm looking for .. i don't know scratch about what kinda pump i would be looking for? what type of pump am i looking for? how powerful? etc

you would probably need a submersible pump, since you've got such a large tank turn over is going to mean a lot of gph for your pump, your probably going to need a pump of a minimum of 1000gph at 6' head which means your looking for at least a Mag 18 pump...there about $140 depending on where you get it...for us in canada equipment runs at a higher price...if he already has the tank drilled for "powerheads" i assume he is talking about the sump return lines, and if thats what he was using he probably has a pump for the sump...

ya. im not quite sure what it all is yet. ill have to talk to him about it. hes jsust not the quickest person answering his emails so that sucks. if he already has a pump i can get it would be amazing. but according to you guys if no pump included all i need is .. pump, media and whatever tubing? .. am i right or did i read wrong?
