I did a reeflo hammerhead external pump for my 450g. The pump was $400 alone, but it does 5800gph. The higher you have to run the plumbing, and the more bends you have in it, the more restrictions you put on the pump and the less gph it will do.
I thought 5800gph would be an insane amount of movement in the tank...its not really.
I say go with the biggest pump you can afford and try to use the largest plumbing you can with the fewest bends.
