Are both ends of the u-tubes submerged and have you sucked the air out?

Once flow starts strong it will pull the last bubbles out usually. Get a straw or airline to the highest point in tube and just suck the air out. Caution though you will likely get tank water in your mouth. Best design ive seen dont use tubes but instead have a small airline fitting at the top where you connect a dosing pump. Then never need to worry about loss of siphon

Tank water in my mouth is nothing new to me. Gross but nothing some mouthwash can't cure. I finally got the syphon going properly but before I could see if the sump would even out I discovered a leak in one of my overflow tubes so I will need to repair that before I try again.

It was PVC fitting leaking. Got a new one built. Unit is running but I still have a small air pocket in one syphon tube that I just can't seem to get rid of.

stick a straw or airline up it while its running and poke the hole it should come out
