I am getting a 120 gallon wide tank (48x24x24) I am still deciding what I should do for filtration. Should I get a sump, or should I use a canister filter or two? Any help/advice is appreciated

Thanks Guys

Depends on budget, stock, available space. You can get some great canisters like fluval or eheim, but there not cheap, and if youe going to be stocking the tank heavily youd probably need two big canisters. Heck there are guys on here with 2or 3 fx5's on a 120! Peronally i like sumps. If you can get a good size sump tank you can set it up how you need it with whatever bio and mechanical filters you want. A 55g sump tank would be great, couple filter socks, filter sponges, bio balls or pond matrix and yoy got a great sump thatll handle almost any boi load you can fit in that tank.

I'd say a sump. I've never had one just due to...I don't know, just never had one. Right now I'm running an fx5 on my 150 and it does a great job but the convenience of being able to put your heaters and all other equipment into the sump makes it the winner.

You honestly don't have to get crazy with a sump either. Just an old tank will work.
Incorporate a drip tray of sorts under the drain(s) for mechanical filtration or use socks. and then just dump a bunch of bio media in the sump. a good return pump is inexpensive under $100.

Alot of people go crazy with sump designs because they are passionate about the hobby, when in reality a rubnermaid tote full of potscrubbers would do the trick.

You can do a sump for less than what a large premium canister filter costs.

I would personally go with a sump if your tank has the provisions for it. I have never had a sump in mine but would love to have one. They look to be much easier to clean and take care of. But as stated above I have two fx5 on my 240 and it is crystal clear as well.
