Sump or canister! That is the question...

From everyone i've spoken to on this subject say that once you go over a 100g tank, you should use a sump. They say that Canister's do not have enough oxygen to support enough beneficial bacteria for anything over a 100 g tank. So I'd say for that size tank, go with a sump. You can build one out of a plastic storage box from walmart fairly easy and inexpensive. However, a 600 gallon might take more than one of these sumps!

I was thinking of doing a sump to but what would you do if you live in a windy/dusty area? I get lots of dust collecting in my cabinet so that means if I had a sump the dust would be contaminating my water.

Put a lid or cover on it!

Thanks for the feedback. Havent had anyone tell me that yet. I will keep that in mind.

I do like sumps. I like to adjust the filtering system to what I like, so sumps are (my) way to go.
Having said that, I also like - a lot - the FX5

So, in my 150g I am using both: a 40g sump (mainly) for biofiltration and an FX5 for mechanical. I also made a wet/dry out of a 10g dogfood bucket.
(the sump could be bigger, but bought the tank and sump 2nd hand, so this was it)

take a look (stand and canopy still on the works):

Nice thought. Use 2 Mag Drive 12. They are good to go.

I just happened to stumble upon those very same pumps on a pond website. Thanks though for letting me know they are good. They have made the cut into the build plan!
