Sumps have better gas exchange capacity, as well as increase overall tank volume. Canisters have the ability to run quiet and don't take up allot of space. Both have benefits / drawbacks. If you run both, the canister is an excellent mech filter and the sump is an excellent bio.

sums it up pretty well right der. recommended sump size 1/3 of main tank volume. I like dedicating my mech and bio filters, and even do so when I have a canister/canister solution.

go for a fluval fx5 and a 30 gal sump
Never seen a Fluval here, seen Eheim but only at an expo. all the shops at JJ market (don't let the word market fool you, the fish section is the size of a small town and the market is the sise of a small city) only have chinese made canisters in stock.
They can't be all bad though and a lot of the fish keepers and sellers there keep saying canisters are better.
Can a sump be covered with a lid and fastened with clips, if it were to be made of plastic for example?
In addition if the glass is 2cm thick would i need to double sheet the bottom because it's drilled?

That's an 81 gal sump:nilly:, surely it doesn't need to be so big if i'm running a canister that is capable of filtering double the tank volume.

No I doesn't need to be that big, but that would be nice eh.
Get a size that works for you, but wouldn't waste my time with a 20.
At least a 55gal, preferably a 75.
