Sump or canister?

A 30g glass tank should be sufficient. Get glass sheets and cut them to
Size and silicone the baffles accordingly. No need for an acrylic sump imho

Do you NEED baffles? Just sayin......

For my diy sumps I used acrylic sheets cut to fit and was able to seal them in place with silicone. I did rough up the edges and surfaces of the acrylic that the silicone would be touching just to give it a better chance to adhere. After it dried, the seal was strong. I did one many years ago too and when I wanted to break it down to use the tank for something, it was extremely difficult to break the seal, even after three years in use. Perhaps the problem others are encountering is using silicone on polished acrylic or acrylic tanks. I could see how it would have a harder time adhering like that.

I thought silicone doesn't stick well to acrylic...

Cutting the glass doesn't sound like fun, but I've cut acrylic before.
IMHO cutting glass is easier then acrylic. It uses basically the same process with a slightly different tool. Glass cuts for me at least come out looking cleaner then when I did some acrylic lids.

Just watch some you tube vids and get an extra piece to practice on first.

Idea was to use an old glass tank, but I wanted water coming from my tank to pass through mechanical filters before passing through bio filters and heater, and then back to the tank

You can still do that without baffles; water flows in through filter socks, then over ceramic rings or matrix in laundry bags, then over heaters before being pumped back to the tank. Too easy!

the filter socks catch fine particles like a polishing pad would? where do you get your socks?
