40-50ish and up. Everything below, I'd stick with HOB's and cans. But that's just me.

I might use a canister up to 150 or so depending on the fish (certainly no beasts, but perhaps Africans). Just too easy to throw a prefilter bag in a sump and clean it every day.

408smokin: I'd LOVE to see a bigger version of your avatat. Your fish?

Canister, mainly because I have never used a sump b4. I would like to, but never got the chance and really don't know how to make a sump.

I think a canister just seems a lot less complicated, though I have never used a sump. And I don't really understand the need for a sump unless the tank is like 400g+, my fx5 does fine as the single source of filtration on my 220g (except when I forget to clean it out :nilly:).

hope this isn't too far off, but at what number of gallons is it wise to consider a sump?

you can run a sump on any sized tank. SW guys run sumps on 10g nano tanks. hell, i built a wet/dry for a 1g tank.(but seriously... i did)

sumps seem a lot more complicated than they actually are, and seem way out of your league if youve never done one. i used to feel the same way. even though ive used store bought wet/dry filters in the past, they seemed strange to me. ever since i built my first one, there was no turning back.

canisters are "easier" considering theyre plug and play, and most of them are self priming these days. but once you have a properly built wet/dry in your tank, you will see just how easy they are to use. maintenance is much easier on a sump.

oh and my vote is for neither.

UGF ftw!

both.

if you DIY a sump it will be cheaper than a canister too :)

Sump for sure.... What kind of question is that :D:nilly:
