Sump or Cannister

You are on the right track with Eheim, but do yourself a favor, and get a 2262 instead. Just a better filter. The Pro series is over rated and not nearly as good of a filter as a Classic. The Classics have no baskets, so no by-pass. They hold more media, and move more water. I have both the Pro 2080, and the 2262 Classic. I would never spend money on a Pro Series again. Get a Classic, or get a sump.http://www.kensfish.com/aquarium-supplies/aquarium-filters/eheim-2262-canister-filter.html

DEFINITELY worth the extra $40 for one.

There's an issue to be taken into a account that is by the way really important to talk about -at least in my neck of the woods-: Power consumption.

Eheim Pro 3 2080 goes with 27w of power consumption, while FX5 tops up to 51W and Eheim 2262 tops up to 81w.

This sole fact would make me go for EHEIM Pro 2080 eventhough the classical series may be more efficient rergarding filtration, power consumption deffo plays an impotant role to make a call and Pro 2080 overmatches in this point.

Cheers.

Not sure if this is still the case, but I was always told that the worry with sumps is that if power is lost you have to worry about your room getting flooded. I am sure there are mechanisms to prevent this but have clue how they work or how big of a concern they. Always wanted to go with a sump, but like I am intimidated by it.

It is incredibly simple to avoid; size your sump correctly! There will always be some "skim" (the water above the pump/overflow) that drains back to the sump when the power is switched off and your sump needs to be big enough to hold this volume of water (and a little more to be on the safe side). You can minimise it by making sure your returns don't siphon back any more water than necessary.

It happens to me aswell... I dont wholly understand the way a sump works out so, being this I'd rather to go for a much simpler and secure system...Cannister.

If you have to worry about how much electricity your filter is using, what's the point in keeping fish? I don't mean to sound rude, but I have no idea how much running my tanks cost me a month for electricity. Nor do I care. It's not so much that it would keep me from buying one filter over another. To each is own, but Eheim Pros are not worth a penny IMO. Having never used a Fluval filter myself, I would get a FX5 before I spent any money on a Eheim Pro.

That is because you live in tne USA and are paid a very good wage, but I live in Mexico and have to deal with a monopolistic power light company that is a big, hughe flocking **** fulll of thieves... just for you to grasp the whole thing, imagine that my power bill increased from 2000 to 2012 in a 3000%!!!!, I live in a 100 squre meters flat... can you imagine that???? how is that possible??? for Christ sake!....

But when youre in hands of a gang of thieves who are in control of the one an only power supplier in the whole country, one morning they feel like increasiing some power bills to get some extra income and bingo!!! you happen to be among the choosen ones!!!...

Maybe I am playing myself the fool with that Idea of saving some bucks by getting a devise that appears to be more power saving tho, I grant you that.

Believe me its the same way in the states, at least where I live the electricity in each county is controlled by separate irrigation districts who arbitrarily increase rates based your individual usage tier compared to the monthly average (not to mention a 20% unemployment rate and 3hr lines full of 40yr old ppl in front of job fairs for McDonalds). My bill is usually $150 a month during the summer for a 2 bedroom apartment, and that was before setting up the 240 with four 300w heaters and two 4-bulb t8 fixtures... plus a few powerheads, HoBs, and a huge offbrand canister that came with the tank (jebo 865uv). When you consider that's like 2000w with over half running 24/7, I'm not sure if that 50w difference would even be measurable (like $5-10). My vote still goes for a sump as the best choice if you haven't purchased the tank or stand yet, especially if you have access to a 50-75g, but if you really don't want to drill it or use hob overflows the 2262 or fx6 would be best imo. I'm seriously considering just putting a sump on the side of my stand with some kind of canopy so it looks like a low table lol
