Sump outbreak of worms and snails

After the deep clean the other day, and adding a 8" air disk in there,I haven't seen anymore worms, but have seen a couple of snails.
I haven't fed pellets either only fresh food.
I don't know if relevant, but I realised that my 55w UV has been turned of by accident for last few weeks. Would that affect it?

It is possible, depending on the size of the prefilter and flowrate/dwell time, that the UV sterilizer killed very small, young, near microscopic detritus worms. Once the worms were larger it shouldn't have had an effect though. I think it had to do with uneaten food.
