Sump polishing question

Ditch the two HOB filters, they break the water surface and cause bad bubbles and then the flow through the tank just carries it around.

I would ditch the HOB in lieu of a nice sized canister filter and fill it up with filter padding to polish the water.

Also make sure your return is below water level (add an elbow fitting if possible) and make sure your return lines aren't leaking anywhere.

Ok, so I sat and starred at the tank and there are SOME bubbles, but theres also a lot of the particles in the water. I watched where I have the HOB's and looks like there is some surface agitation but not a lot. And I was looking into canister, but with a 20$ sock hanger, and 50$ overflow, and Maybe a small pump I can get away cheaper.. plus I can run super fine micron socks to catch the crap.. or at least that is what I was my thinking. And with the additional pump I'll have the same flow without the hob's and can ditch them.. what do u think?

Go for it!
But I think you're going to have the same results you have now. If the particles you're seeing are big enough to see with your eyes your HOB filters should be able to trap them.
You sure what your seeing isn't sand as I see that is your substrate and you said you have one of the returns facing down behind the drift wood. So this could be stirring up the sand and suspending it into the aquarium. Try moving that return up a bit so it's not shooting at the sand. Just an idea.

My substrate is simple pool filtration sand.. its never been a problem as far as being stirred up and making sand storms.. I've got 4seperate aquariums all running marineland hob's so to cut cost, I started buying bulk padding and using it in them all. Its the same padding I use in my sump. Its just the simple generic blue/white bonded padding and does ok but I figured if I run the sock it'd do even btr plus I could eliminate the hob's altogether to cut costs as well

I thought about doin that or some other things along those lines but I'd be afraid that the drip tray would overflow from being clogged up and not flow right over the Bio balls. That's why I was looking into the sock hanger. No modification to the sump to hurt resale if that ever comes about and its a sure fire fix for the polishing. But as always I prefer to get feed back and see what others have done and so forth

I'd put a filter sock under each effluent line to the sump (if 1 then 1 sock), and I'd remove some bioballs to make room for the sock.
Or, I'd ad another overflow box, and put the outflow into a sock in the other sump compartment.
With another overflow box, you could open the valve from the pump to increase flow, and not worry about overflowing the tank. Looks like you've got the pump throttled by about half its capacity.

As you can see, same as you, I run a Mag 18 (unthrottled), with the overflows from the tank into 2 filter socks, and the water is clear.

I don't use traditional bio media, just a separate planted sump, before the sump with filter socks.

I do believe you could remove some bio balls to make room for a sock safely.
