What type of maintenance should we be doing on our external pumps running or sumps? I know we should be cleaning them but should we be doing an more then that to increase the useful life and the reliability of the pump?

No just cleaning it properly is fine. Make sure your not restricting the flow as well. Reduce intake maximize output to make the pump last longer

Depending on the type of pump you should inspect the impeller and shaft for wear when cleaning.

Have a spare on hand and replace the worn parts before they cause damage.

If there is a rubber o-ring or gasket you can lightly lubricate it with a 100% silicone food grade grease.

Keep the prefilter clean if it has one.

personally I follow the manufacturers guidelines. since my inputs are considerably better filtered than the manufacturers, it works out well.
