They're actually very easy to build and maintain.
Do a search from here for DIY wet dry, wet / dry, filter, sump in any and all combinations

And walmart has cheap 55G tanks that you can get for the sump. Don't need to buy the kit or anything, just the glass tank. Then go through the DIY section to get some plans, and then have some plexi cut to size and install. Is the tank going to be drilled? If it is, then an internal overflow would be great. If not, then you need to go with a HOB Overflow.
Alright, I'll be sure to search for those things and let you know when I do. I already have an empty 55g in the shed and another 75.
